Program Overview:
This ACGME-accredited fellowship offers comprehensive, well-balanced training in gastrointestinal, pancreatobiliary, and liver pathology across the full spectrum of neoplastic and non-neoplastic disease. Fellows train within the Southeast’s most prominent academic health system — an institution with a longstanding national reputation for excellence in patient care, education, and research — gaining exposure to a high volume of complex and diagnostically challenging cases.
Clinical Training:
The fellowship experience is built around daily one-on-one sign-out with dedicated GI pathology faculty. A team of ten GI pathology fellowship-trained pathologists offer exceptional breadth and depth of expertise. Fellows rotate through the full range of GI pathology services, including biopsies, resections, referral cases, and extramural consultations. Additional clinical responsibilities include participation in intraoperative consultations, supervision of specimen grossing by pathology residents and pathologists’ assistants, and engagement in quality improvement initiatives focused on gastrointestinal and liver pathology.
Education and Conferences:
Fellows participate in a rich educational environment that includes
– Daily GI pathology consensus conference
– Pathology didactic sessions and teaching conferences
– Multidisciplinary (tumor board) conferences (attendance and presentation)
– GI pathology journal club
– Teaching of medical students and residents
Research and Career Development:
The fellowship is designed to foster both diagnostic expertise and scholarly growth. Protected research time is built into the schedule, and fellows have the flexibility to pursue elective rotations across the medical center tailored to their individual interests and career goals.
