The ACGME-accredited Gastrointestinal (GI) Pathology Fellowship at Mass General Brigham combines the expertise and resources of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital to prepare fellows for academic careers in GI pathology.
The one-year program provides advanced diagnostic training in gastrointestinal, liver, and pancreaticobiliary pathology across a wide variety of contexts. Fellows benefit from a service handling approximately 53,000 cases annually, including 800 medical liver biopsies and 180 liver explants, as well as broad institutional expertise, clinical trials, and collaborations across Boston’s academic and life sciences communities.
Fellows develop a systematic approach to diagnosis and produce clear, clinically integrated reports that synthesize clinical, procedural, radiologic, laboratory, gross, and microscopic findings.
Responsibilities include previewing cases, drafting reports, signing out with attending pathologists, and assuming graduated independence. Fellows participate in gastroenterology, hepatology, and subspecialty tumor conferences; teach residents and medical students; and are encouraged to pursue clinical, translational, or molecular research.
Rigorous clinical and teaching experience prepares fellows for independent practice, while individualized research mentorship supports their next career step.
Applicants must be certified in anatomic pathology or eligible for certification by the American Board of Pathology, demonstrate a commitment to an academic career in GI, liver, or pancreaticobiliary pathology, and qualify for a Massachusetts medical license.
