Medical University of South Carolina

The Gastrointestinal & Hepatic Pathology Service of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston offers a one year program of non-ACGME accredited subspecialty training in gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology. During this time, fellows are given primary responsibility for examination and diagnosis of gastrointestinal and hepatic surgical pathology specimens. The gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology fellow must be board eligible and will function as a junior attending (credentialed as an instructor). Independent pathology signout component of the fellowship is contingent upon taking and passing the AP/CP or AP only examination given the by the American Board of Pathology and the assessment of the faculty. The Medical University of South Carolina Surgical Pathology Laboratory examines approximately 6,700 Gastrointestinal surgical pathology accessions and 1000 Liver surgical pathology accessions per year. Many cases involve immunocytochemical, molecular, ultrastructural or flow cytometric examination. The gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology fellowship offers opportunity for teaching residents, medical students, and for participation in interdepartmental conferences. There will also be exposure to use of telepathology. The fellow will participate in the surgical pathology activities of the department and his/her responsibilities will include frozen section diagnoses, final histopathologic diagnoses, rush cases, consultation cases, on-call duties, consultations with gastroenterology and hepatology divisions and teaching sessions with the clinical house staff. Emphasis is placed on the achievement of confidence, as well as accuracy in diagnostic gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology. Depending on interest and previous experience, the fellow may participate in ongoing research projects.
