Our mission is to contribute to the prevention and the cure of cancer through the education of future GI Pathologists, especially those with an interest in an academic career. The GI Pathology Fellowship Program is designed to provide broad exposure, along with in-depth training in all aspects of neoplastic and non-neoplastic gastrointestinal (GI) and hepato-pancreato-biliary pathology, including both routine and diagnostic, immunohistochemical and other advanced ancillary techniques.
The GI Pathology Fellowship is a one-year position that will be an opportunity to enhance the diagnostic and clinical correlative skills and competency of the fellow to pursue a successful career in the academic, community hospital and practice settings. This will include the gross inspection and dissection, frozen section selection and interpretation, as well as complete evaluation of the surgical and consult cases assigned to the fellow and under direct supervision of the attending and participating faculty members with expertise in gastrointestinal and hepato-pancreatobiliary pathology. The variety of lesions/tumors seen at Moffitt Cancer Center includes not only pathologic conditions (mostly tumors) from any portion of the GI tract, but also transplantation-related specimens not usually found in other GI fellowships across the country. In addition, the integration of the pathology fellow with the GI Tumor Program in a programmatic fashion makes this fellowship very competitive.
Finally, the extension of the fellowship to include rotations in the CLIA-certified Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory and for exposure to the remaining CCSG Cores and to QA/Lab Management topics is very original and will attract fellows across the country. This fellowship reflects Moffitt’s national reputation as the steward of personalized medicine and translational research.
