A 54-year-old woman presented with melena. On examination she was found to have abdominal tenderness. A CT scan revealed a large left upper quadrant mass arising from the jejunum with diffuse hepatic metastases.
A biopsy of one of the liver lesions was performed.

A 24 year old male presented with fatigue, fever, watery diarrhea, and a cough with sputum production for the past three weeks…… Representative histologic sections of biopsies from the duodenum and descending colon are shown.

Cleveland Clinic Florida is pleased to announce the First Annual Cleveland Clinic Multispecialty Pathology Symposium: A Practical Diagnostic Approach to Surgical Pathology & Cytology . This will take place February 1 – 2, 2014 at our David G. Jagelman, MD Conference Center in Weston, Florida. Our program directors, Dr. John Goldblum, Dr. Mariana Berho, and Dr. Cristina Magi-Galluzzi, would like to provide GIPS members with an opportunity to participate in this exceptional educational activity!
This one and a half day symposium will provide guidance to the attendees on diagnosing and handling challenging cases in clinical practice including esophageal diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, colon and rectal cancer, and prostate neoplasia. This program will focus on practical and evidence based aspects of managing commonly encountered dilemmas in Gastrointestinal, Urological surgical Pathology, and Cytopathology. Cytopathology will emphasize diagnostic challenges in EBUS, pancreatic, and thyroid FNAs, including the role of molecular testing. Each session will offer a didactic presentation that will allocate time for questions from the audience. This course will assist practicing pathologists and residents in maintaining, developing and increasing knowledge, competence and professional performance with the intent to improve patient care and reduce disease impact.
2014 Young Investigator Award Winner: Jason L Hornick M.D., Ph.D.
Criteria:
The GIPS Young Investigator Award recognizes seminal contributions or a significant body of published work that advances the field of gastrointestinal pathology. Successful candidates must be first or senior authors of
publications submitted for consideration.
Eligibility:
Applicants must be GIPS members in good standing. Only candidates who are younger than 45 years of age at the time of the application deadline will be considered for the award.
Procedure:
Any current GIPS member can sponsor a candidate for the Young Investigator Award. Nomination forms are available here. Review of applications and final selection of awardees will be performed by the Nominating Committee.
Deadline:
The deadline for applications is February 15, 2014.
Notification & Presentation:
Final selection of awardees will be made by February 28, 2014 and the selected candidate will be notified. A formal award presentation will be made during the GIPS business meeting following the Companion Meeting at the USCAP annual conference.

2014 Young Investigator Award Winner: Jason L Hornick M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Hornick’s achievements in Gastrointestinal Pathology span teaching, clinical and translational research. He has studied a wide range of GI diseases, in particular helping to characterize GI mesenchymal tumors. Recently, he has focused on defining the biology, clinical and therapeutic significance of succinate dehydrogenase deficient GIST. He has written textbook chapters on GI mesenchymal tumors as well as gastric pathology, colon polyps and tumors of the intestines. He is also involved in several editorial boards, allowing him to be on the vanguard of new research and to collaborate with peers in shaping the field.
